The MANCHESTER TERRIER is the oldest identifiable Terrier breed, having been traced back to the late 1570s, and was then known as the Black and Tan Terrier. By the early 1800s, the Black and Tan Terrier was cross bred to the Whippet to produce a breed that was not only a proficient rodent killer, but also a very capable game courser. They were popular in Taverns in Manchester, England to rid them of rats, for many decades they were considered the best ratter of all the dog breeds.
The breed was renamed the Manchester terrier as the Manchester district of England became the breed center. This breed has maintained consistency in type and appearance for nearly two centuries (at the very least) The Manchester Terrier is recognized by the American and Canadian Kennel Club in two varieties - The Toy, weighing up to 12 pounds and the Standard, weighing over 12 pounds and up 22 pounds.
The Manchester Terrier has been instrumental in the development of other breeds including the Doberman Pinscher. A highly intelligent breed, the Manchester Terrier is capable of excelling in many tasks.

The DOBERMAN PINSCHER was first bred in Germany by Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman around 1980. He set out to breed a new type of dog that, in his opinion, would be the perfect combination of strength, speed, endurance, loyalty, intelligence, and ferocity. He visited many dog shows and breeding kennels to find the particular characteristics he wanted for his foundation stock. Years of trial and error passed before the refined breed capable of reproducing itself now known as the Doberman Pinscher was produced.
